Voorkamer was an artist-run initiative by Peter Morrens and Rik De Boe. It presented a platform for solo and thematic exhibitions to both national and international contemporary artists. Since 1996, it has been Voorkamer’s main objective to create an independent context for artists to display their work.
Apart from these exhibitions held at the Holy Ghost site in the Belgian city of Lier, group exhibitions as well as collaborations with other artist-run initiatives and art organizations were staged at different locations. Each project implied a specific approach that reflected its architectural, historical and social value.
Unlike mainstream contemporary art initiatives Voorkamer has put an alternative curatorial approach into practice by focusing on an artist driven perspective. Exhibitions were defined by personal, associative rather than theoretic or academic propositions. By introducing a delicate sense of humor and despair as constructive elements in the process of staging an art show Voorkamer stood for an uncommon but open approach to experiencing contemporary art.
